In June 1998 Ciencias y Artes Patagonia was founded at the Centro Cultural Borges in a Buenos Aires. The city at the time was saturated with World Cup excitement.

Now 16 years later, in a country again at fever pitch thanks to the brilliance of Lionel Messi, CAPat continues its mission in promoting the importance of heritage care and the public understanding of science, art and design.

In 1998 CAPat was aware of the physics-outreach success of the magnetism kit of the Magic Penny Trust in London, with its beautiful specially designed magnets and UK magnetic coins. Unfortunately, none of the Argentinian coins in 1998 were magnetic and the kits were difficult to obtain in Argentina.

As an alternative, several projects were developed using aluminium cans. With cans some of the mathematical and packing concepts that the magnetic kits illustrate could be studied. These projects were highly successful with local schools. But progress with respect to a wider understanding of magnetism and physics was slow.

In 2006 the Argentinian 5 and 10 centavos coins began to be made of brass-plated steel and as such were magnetic. This and the finding that many old Argentinan coins dating back to 1941 are also magnetic led to a renewed interest.

In January 2013 at an exhibition in Hotel Yene Hue in Madryn and in associated lectures and demonstrations at the dinosaur museum (Mef) in Trelew, CAPat described many fascinating new findings, using old and new coins of Argentina and of some 70 other countries around the world.

In recent weeks considerable further progress has been made with the design of a host of related science-art installations and experiments using paper clips and washers, with and without coins, and an inexpensive ceramic block magnet. Such magnets are readily available world-wide.

Some of these installations are presented here including "Paper Clip Writer" and a magical magnetic cube reminiscent of that of Erno Rubik.

The simplicity, low cost and accessibilty of the equipment required should make them particularly attractive to teachers and parents alike.

Hopefully such activities might play a small part in increasing the numbers of young persons taking up careers in science engineering and design, which industry internationally so desperately needs.

1. Ceramic Block Magnet Magnetism Kit
One magnet, paper clips, washers and everyday bridge supports. - boiled egg and coins optional
Is there, anywhere, a less expensive, simpler, safer, science kit with more creative experimental opportunities?

2. Magnetism and Gravity in Balance.
This and related experiments were possible over 70 years ago.
CAPat and the Magic Penny Trust know of no previous descriptions of anything like it, outside its own writings.
If there are, please let us know.

3. Vamos Argentina!
Here the paper clip is simply balanced on the egg lying on the table.
Depending on the length of the unfolded clip and the height of the bridge towers and egg, balance might be best obtained by placing table mats or cards under the egg or towers.
The only glue used is to stick the flag to the clip.

4. Lio Messi in full flight. His left is moving so fast it cannot be seen! Next time, perhaps, it will be made in white and skyblue!
Again no glues. The washer is simple balanced on the clip and the clip on the table.
Hang from the bridge first, then pull down together.
The height can be adjusted slightly by bending the clip.

5. "Dancing with the daffodils" in Welsh Patagonia, Argentina.
Watch the clips dance as they are touched or blown, or another magnet passes nearby.
The flowers heads are glued to the paper clips.
How many straightened clips, with or without flower heads can be stood under one magnet?

6. Happy Birthday. Saying it with flowers.
The label is glued to the clip.
The flowers are simply inserted into a loop in the bent clip.
Decorated shapes, and other objects can be similarly displayed.
Here the magnets have different faces on top.
If they were closer, one of them would need to be turned over to prevent them attracting each other.

7. Simple steel washers can also be balanced in a similar manner - here on the edge of a Argentine 2 peso note.
How many washers can be similarly balanced on a dollar bill?
Other steel objects such as nails and ball bearings can also be balanced similarly.
For safety and practical reasons CAPat has limited most of its research to coins, paper clips, and washers.

8. CAPat´s Magical Magnetic Rubik-like Cube
Much is possible with 1 ceramic block magnet, more with 2 and 4 and much much more with 8.
When the sides of each magnet have approximate dimensions in the ratio 1:2:4 eg. approximately 10mm x 20mm x 40mm, 8 magnets can be packed together in the shape of a cube.
When the sides of each magnet are coloured differently and all the magnets are similarly coloured, a magical magnetic cube similar to that of Rubik is obtained.

9. Paper Clip Writer "Magic"
Make Magic with 5 separated magnets and 5 refolded paper clips.
Balancing the characters vertically is easy with practice once you find the best height for the magnet bridge.
Stretch and squash the characters until they balance.

10. Paper Clip Writer: "Magnetic"
Uses all 8 magnets of the cube.
All the magnets are placed with same side (colour) upward so that they do not attract each other.
Getting the letters to all face forward, particularly when the magnets are close together sometimes requires a lot of patience. The letter "T" is written as t for this reason.

11. Paper Clip Writer. "Physics" as not seen before.
paper clip writer 12 robin linhope, maría victoria, CAPat
12. Paper Clip Writer: "Dinosaur"
Note how all the magnets have the same face (blue as here, or red) upwards. Whether it is a black face or white that faces forward is optional and does not affect the ease of balancing.

13.Paper Clip Writer: "Patagonia".
Uses 8 plus 1 magnets.

14.Paper Clip Writer "Lio Messi" 1.
Uses all 8 magnets.
